Everyone has done it: a question you could answer instantly at home disappears the moment it is asked in front of people. The information has not gone anywhere. What has changed is your ability to reach it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under pressure the brain prioritises threat monitoring over retrieval. Working memory, which you need to hold the question while searching for the answer, gets partly occupied by watching the room. This is why the answer so often arrives thirty seconds later, walking away. The threat has passed and the capacity comes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Practising in the conditions you will perform in is the single most effective fix. If you only ever answer quiz questions silently, in private, you have never practised the thing that actually goes wrong. Saying answers out loud, to somebody, at speed, is uncomfortable for a week and then stops being difficult. That discomfort is the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Repeat the question aloud before answering. It sounds like a stalling tactic and it is, but it also re-loads the question into working memory and gives retrieval a second attempt. And answer the part you do know first. Starting to speak often unlocks the rest \u2014 silence is what lets the panic build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
