A quiz in a classroom does something a worksheet cannot: it forces retrieval under mild social pressure, which is one of the most reliable ways to move knowledge into long-term memory. It also fails badly if the same three students answer everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The temptation is to cover the whole topic. Resist it. A quiz that revisits eight key facts three times each will do more for retention than one that touches forty facts once. Ask questions about material covered a week or two ago rather than this morning’s lesson. Retrieval works best when the memory has started to fade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Score in teams, and let teams confer. A student who would never answer alone will contribute to a group, and hearing the reasoning is where much of the learning happens. Rotate who answers for the team so the confident student cannot speak for everyone. A simple rule \u2014 the answer must come from a different person each round \u2014 fixes this without singling anyone out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Short rounds of five or six questions keep attention better than one long round. Read each question twice and give a fixed thinking time so the fast students do not set the pace. Avoid deducting points for wrong answers. Penalties teach students to stay quiet, which is the opposite of what a quiz is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
